'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' Ratings Drop Off, Mixed Reviews Threaten Cancellation

One of the fall's most anticipated new series, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., premiered last week with record ratings. So much so, that ABC re-aired the pilot again last Thursday. Despite the overwhelmingly high ratings, the Avengers spin-off received negative reviews. Now with the second episode dropping a third in the ratings, the future of the spy show might be threatened with cancellation.

ABC executives were thrilled with last week's landmark success. The premiere episode proved to be the network's highest rated new show in the past five years. However, it appears that the honeymoon might be over, as the second episode drastically dropped in the ratings.

A ratings drop after a big premiere event isn't all that uncommon and...to be fair...viewers who turned in for the first episode, might be waiting to catch the next episode via their DVRs or Hulu Plus. Although, it's not the Breaking Bad/Walking Dead style, appointment television that ABC was hoping to achieve.

Every single ABC series dropped several percentage points Tuesday night, putting the network in third place. NBC proved to be the big winner of the night with its hit singing competition, The Voice.

Despite his success at the helm of the blockbuster Avengers, writer/director Joss Whedon is no stranger to canceled TV shows. Whedon's hit series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and its spin-off Angel are the exceptions to an otherwise spotted TV career. While receiving cult status, his shows Firefly and Doll House were both short lived on the small screen.

Where most reviews note that the show leaves room for improvement, it appears viewers expect something a little more super from the superhero series.
