Who better to pin your classical frustrations on than the pop songstress Ariana Grande? It appears that trumpeters of all stripes are up-in-arms over her latest music video for "Focus."
Apparently, the argument centers over the last moments of the video, in which Grande and her troupe of dancers wield brass of all kinds and start to play along to the song, which features orchestral instrumentation.
Forget licking doughnuts, this is Grande's latest critique on her career, yielding all sorts of drama. Anyone who is anyone in the orchestral world has taken to social media and other news outlets to report the heresy.
Thanks to the New York Post, we have them at our disposal:
Robert Sullivan, music professor at Northwestern University and a former principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic, says there's definitely something off.
"Her hand position holding the trumpet is not ideal, [n]or what most trumpet teachers would recommend," he says.
The article also quotes trumpeter William Lucas of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, who states, "Although not a traditional grip, this is a modified trumpet grip made famous by the late, great [trumpet player] Maynard Ferguson."
Grande may not be equipped to play the trumpet, but the visual certainly worked for the landscape of video.
This wouldn't be the first time Ariana has irritated listeners. Rumors have circulated that she is also not so kind to her fans, life coach or fellow musicians.
Despite her obvious talent as a singer, it seems that people prefer to harp on the negative.
Whatever the case may be, the video can be watched below. Tell us what you think!
