'Hey Girl' Singer Billy Currington Pleads No Contest in Terrorist Abuse Case

"Hey Girl" singer Billy Currington plead no contest last Friday to charges involving making abusive, terrorist threats against a 70-year-old charter boat captain, who rode by his house earlier this summer.

Country singer Billy Currington, best know for his songs, "Hey Girl," “Good Directions,” and “Pretty Good at Drinking Beer,” proved “People are Crazy” when he chased down and verbally assaulted an elderly boat captain for riding near his property. The 70-year-old charter boat captain, Charles Harvey Ferrelle, came a little too close to Currington's home back in April, so the country star did what any reasonable person would do. He chased the old man down to a restaurant with a video camera and proceeded to threatened the man's life.

Currington was later charged with "making terrorist threats" and "abuse of an elder person by inflicting mental anguish," both of which were felony charges. Ferrelle feared for his life according to the police report: "If I hadn't gotten into my ship fast enough, I believe he would have run me over," he said and he claimed that Currington threatened to "catch him in the river" and the he would "finish him off."

Currington later went on to defend himself, via Twitter:

"Harassing artists often at their home by boat should be illegal. thats all i know."

Now Currington has plead no contest to the charges. In court, his lawyer, Alex Zipperer, said that his client was:

“extraordinarily embarrassed by the whole thing. It certainly won’t happen in the future.”

Currington was sentenced to five years probation and anger management, as well a $1,000 fine. Also as part of his probation, Currington is not allowed to have any contact with Captain Ferrelle. If Currington successfully completes his probation he will be able to have his record expunged, because this was his first offense.
