Hawkeye and Black Widow Spin-Off Movie? Joss Whedon Talks Big Plans For 'Avengers' Stars

Audiences fell in love with Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner in last year's Avengers, despite the two super spies being handicapped by having neither super powers nor stand alone films. Fans have been asking for a Hawkeye and Black Widow spin-off movie, but have yet to receive any word on if that might happen. However, Joss Whedon does have big plans for the pair in the upcoming sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Anyone who has ever seen anything Joss Whedon has ever done knows that he has a weakness for strong ladies. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator is addicted to his heroines. So it shouldn't surprise people to learn that he wants to place a lot of focus on the Black Widow, a.k.a.Natasha Romanoff. As Whedon recently told Nerd HQ:

"Natasha is a huge part of the sequel because you do want to concentrate on the people who don't have their own franchises. Although she in 'Cap 2,' [and] she's great. She was the most fun for me because she's not a hero, you know, and it's something that I read—and I feel bad that I can't remember who wrote the book—but it's in one of the books explaining, 'These guys are heroes, you are a spy. It's a different thing—it's a different skill set—and you don't have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff.' And that just makes her so interesting to me. So yeah, the stuff I've got going on with her in the second one is killer."

Still, Whedon isn't planning on not inviting the Widow's beau, Hawkeye, to the party. According to a recent interview with ScreenRant, we can plan to see a lot more Hawkeye in the sequel as well:

“It’s very much a global Avengers film. A lot of the movie has to do with their place not just in America, but the world. Part of the fun for me, definitely this time around, is writing Hawkeye. He did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and had to walk around all scowly for most of the movie so now it’s nice to actually have the character there and see him interact with the other guys.”

That is good news, considering Whedon has a lot of red in his ledger, as far as Jeremy Renner is concerned. The actor wasn't too happy about Hawkeye's zombifaction at the hands of Loki in the last film. Renner voiced his disappointment to the LA Times, saying:

"I prefer [playing the good version of the character], because if we go to the evil part, or hypnotized or whatever the heck you want to call it, it’s kind of a vacancy. Not even a bad guy, because there’s not really a consciousness to him. The interesting part was being guilty about the bad things I did do when I was hypnotized. I think he’s already an interesting enough character. To really kind of take away who that character is and just have him be this sort of robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses. Again, I could just focus on the task. I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. So yeah, fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No. That doesn’t exist in that time [that he's hypnotized]. It happens to be for most of the movie."
