The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced Wednesday its recipients of the 2013 Jazz Masters.
Pianist and singer Mose Allison, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, and Latin jazz bandleader Eddie Palmieri, and New York jazz club owner Lorraine Gordon have been selected for the nation's highest honor in jazz.
Established by Congress in 1965, NEA have been offering support and funding for artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation for the benefit of individuals and communities. Since 1982, the independent agency has conferred the Jazz Masters Award to great figures of jazz who are recognized for their lifetime achievements and significant contributions to the development and performance of jazz.
The legends of jazz who have received this honor so far include Count Basie, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock.
The new class of jazz masters will be honored on January 14 at Lincoln Center in New York and receive $25,000 fellowships.
