Rihanna Starring in Luc Besson's 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets'

Pop-star singer and actress Rihanna will be starring the Luc Besson's big screen adaptation of sci-fi graphic novel 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.'

The world famous singer and actress has been cast in the adaptation expected to be released July 21, 2017. Rihanna will be joining "Dane DeHaan ('The Amazing Spider-Man 2'), Clive Owen ('Closer') and Cara Delevingne ('Paper Towns')" in the cast.

The movie is being produced by EuropaCorp, and I gotta be honest, when I skimmed through the info I was researching, I thought EuropaCorp was the entity the protagonists worked for. No, Valerian and Laureline (the protagonists) actually are "agents of the Spatio-Temporal Service, which protects the planets of the Terran Empire." Since Rihanna is not going to be one of the two main protagonists, I'm curious to see what role she'll be playing. "While Rihanna's role was not specified, the director confirmed 'she has a big part.'" I hope it's a good one, as while I'm generally not fond of pop-stars, I did enjoy her acting in Battleship, even if the movie wasn't that great.

The movie is set in the 28th century an in a city called Alpha, which is supposedly home to thousands of various alien species from across the universe. I'm assuming that's referring to sentient species, as I'm sure there will be plenty of alien flora and fauna that come along as well.

The movie is based of the long running French sci-fi graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline.

Despite being a French graphic novel, Besson had originally considered filming outside of France as "French movies shot in English" were not eligible for a fairly significant tax rebate from the government. However, Besson was able to convince the French government to amend the original law and allow these types of movies to receive the tax rebate.

So how do you think Rihanna will do in this movie?
