Boston Red Sox Rumors: Johnny Cueto Is a Potential 2015 MLB Free Agency Target?

Johnny Cueto is set to his 2015 MLB free agency, but there are rumors swirling around that he could be a top target for the Boston Red Sox when the free agency period opens up.

Boston is coming off of an incredibly disappointing season, in which they finished the year with a 78-84 record. That record was good enough for dead last in the American League East division. Obviously the Red Sox do not like losing and their fans aren't used to that with their recent success, which makes acquiring talent this coming offseason a must for the Sox.

According to Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report, Cueto could very well end up signing with the Red Sox.

Picking Cueto up would be a huge step in the right direction for the Red Sox. They are in need of bringing in a legitimate No. 1 pitcher, which Cueto has proven himself to be over the past couple of years in particular. He has been a huge pickup for the Kansas City Royals and is a major key for them in the World Series this season against the Mets.

Even before being traded to the Royals, he was a major piece for the Cincinnati Reds this season.

Throughout the 2015 season between Kansas City and Cincinnati, Cueto compiled an 11-13 record to go along with a 3.44 ERA and a 3.83 K/BB ratio. Those numbers may not look like superstar numbers, but he has pitched a lot better than his statistics suggest.

At 29 years old, Cueto could very well be the long-term ace that the Red Sox are searching for. He isn't going to cost quite as much as either David Price or Zack Greinke will be asking for when free agency opens up. Boston has to make a splash this offseason and Cueto is exactly the type of guy that they need.

Cueto is going to have quite a few teams interested him, but playing for Boston is a major draw for free agents. They definitely have a shot, so expect to see them make contact and see if they can get something done with him.
