Tonight is the night! It's finally here--the premiere of NBC's Thursday night comedy fall line-up. Michael J Fox's highly anticipated return to TV and veteran hit, Parks and Rec., lead the way with hour-long episodes. Welcome to the Family and Sean Saves The World debut next week on Oct 3.
NBC once owned Thursday night TV programming. The night, at one time dubbed "Must See TV," was once home to some of comedy's highest-rated programs--with hit shows like Friends, Frasier, Will and Grace, Cheers, Wings, Seinfeld and The Cosby Show, just to the name a few.
The next generation of comedies, Scrubs, 30 Rock and The Office only achieved moderate ratings but were highly acclaimed. Now a new lineup of hopefuls aim to take back the night. NBC is pulling out some its big guns, to take the shot.
Tonights lineup will be lead off by the fall's sole returning comedy, Parks and Rec. The show, now in it's sixth season, features Saturday Night Live alumni, Amy Poehler, alongside a cast of up-and-comers, including: comedian Aziz Ansari and Disney/Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Prat. West Wing star Rob Lowe joined the cast in the second season but is expected to leave the show sometime this season alongside actress Rashida Jones. P&R Season Six premiers at 8:00 p.m. with an hour-long episode.
The Michael J Fox Show will debut that night in an hour long block beginning at 9/10c, before moving to it's regular time slot at 9:30/10:30c the following week. The show marks Michael J. Fox's first series since the actor departure from ABC's Spin City.
The show centers around Fox's character Mike Henry who, like Fox, is making his return to TV after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
Filling in the rest of the night beginning next week on October 3, will be Welcome to the Family in the the 8:30/9:30c slot and Sean Saves the World at 9/10c. Welcome to the Family stars Mike O'Malley and Marry McCormack, while SSTW sees the return of Will and Grace's star Sean Hayes to NBC. The NBC drama, Parenthood makes it's move to Thursday night in the hour-long 10/11c time slot.
