What to Watch on Netflix: Syfy's Dark Matter

Figuring out what to watch on Netflix can be tricky, especially if you are interested in fantasy/sci-fi shows. Reminding me a bit of Firefly, Syfy's Dark Matter is a good show for sci-fi enthusiasts.

I will be upfront, I cannot say in all honesty that Dark Matter is as good as Firefly. Nothing is (Browncoats represent!) But Dark Matter is pretty good, and there are several correlations between the two shows that can give you that Firefly fix you need if you've got the itch to try something different.

The protagonists are all criminals/edge-of-the law types. This is pretty obvious from the first episode. The characters pretty much all have a counterpart to that of the crew of the Serenity. The Jayne doppelganger is pretty blatant. Guns, guns, guns. And the same goes for the rest of the crew, except the African-American isn't a preacher. And the captain isn't a space cowboy. And Dark Matter has a ninja/samurai.

Anyways, the show starts off with a bang and doesn't stop. Treachery, betrayal, confusion, deceit, it's all here. It's not nearly as bright and cheery as Firefly. Dark Matter is much gloomier and less hopeful. It's the gritty version of Firefly. I am enjoying the show. I was a bit wary of it at first because the description on Netflix doesn't really do it justice, but I took a chance, and now am enjoying it thoroughly. It's a good show. I doubt it will be a classic, but in a dearth of new good sci-fi shows, this has been a small oasis.

Dark Matter is actually based on a Dark Horse comic series by the same name. So far, one season has been produced by Syfy and another has been greenlit for release in 2016.
