Vince Gilligan, the creator of AMC's hit drama Breaking Bad, is returning to network TV. The Emmy award winning writer/producer has signed a new deal with CBS.
Its a wonderful time for television. Just as a ton of new fall series are beginning, a host of exciting new shows are also being announced. Network television producers are itching to get back to the top of the TV game. In recent years, we have seen a lot of the nation's focus moving to cable channels and away from the basis broadcast champions. The mass exodus of TV viewers to the double and triple digit side of the dial came in large part thanks to shows like Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad.
Now, one major network has found it's answer to Vince Gilligan...and that's Vince Gilligan. CBS has reportedly signed a big money development contract with the writer.
Vince Gilligan has to be the hottest name in TV right now. The creator of Breaking Bad got his start in the 90s on a little show called the X Files. Now that Breaking Bad is coming to its end, everyone is lining up to get a piece of Gilligan. Luckily for Sony, they hold an exclusive contract with Gilligan. Sony's president of programming, Zack Van Amburg, told the press on Wednesday about how in-demand their client is:
“In the Hollywood development community, Vince is the hottest name in the business. If I went somewhere with the phone book with Vince’s name on it, I could sell it.”
Turns out, it's CBS that is shelling out big bucks for Gilligan's latest drama, Battle Creek. The funny thing is, Gilligan tried to sell the very same show to the network ten years ago.
This latest announcement is one in a recent pattern of networks giving full season orders to new series without a pilot. This once-rare-event, is fast becoming the new normal Earlier in the week, Fox announced that it has direct ordered two new series--a Batman prequel called Gotham and a new Tina Fey comedy.
