Ian Fleming's latest successor to the famed James Bond series, William Boyd, has some big plans for everyone's favorite secret agent. Boyd is attempting to bring Bond back to his roots and away from his action star status. He even has talked about replacing Daniel Craig with Daniel Day-Lewis.
William Boyd, writer of spy novels Restless and Waiting for Sunrise, is the latest man to take over the reigns of the 007 series of novels. With the full approval of Ian Fleming's heirs, Boyd is reviving Bond in his new book, Solo.
In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Boyd talked about his James Bond makeover, although you might be able to call it more of bath, as Boyd is attempting to wash away a lot of the Hollywood dirt that Bond has been associated with as of late.
As part of his new/old look at Bond, Boyd has even made a suggestion to readers as to how they should invision the character. According to Boyd, Fleming had previously described James Bond as
“looking like the American singer-songwriter Hoagy Carmichael. Daniel Day-Lewis looks like Hoagy Carmichael.”
That's not all, Boyd is planning on adding more layers to the character then modern audiences might be used to:
“He’s not a cartoon character. Fleming gave him all his traits, his tastes, his likes and dislikes — and his complexes. Bond has a dark side. He’s troubled sometimes. He weeps quite easily. And he makes mistakes. That’s what’s so interesting about him...Bond is mature. He’s seasoned, He’s lived a lot, he’s a man of experience. He may not run quite as fast as he could when he was 25, but he’s seen how life has changed and times have changed. It’s a good age for him to be.”
Boyd also plans to put a slightly different and more romantic spin on the notorious womanizer:
“There’s a lot of eating and drinking. There’s a lot of interest in clothes. Bond is a sensualist. Bond has relationships with women. It seems to me he wants a relationship — it’s not just casual sex.”
However, Solo won't leave the spy stag. The new book features two new Bond girls, although Boyd is not a fan of the term.
What do you think about Boyd's Bond. Would you like to see Daniel Day-Lewis play the spy in the next film?
