Move over S.H.I.E.L.D, there is a new sheriff in town and his name is Jim Gordon. Fox has announced that will develop a new TV series based on Gotham City. The show will be set before Batman's days as the caped crusader and focus around a young GCPD detective, James Gordon. Even though the new series will predate Batman, the network has promised plenty of villains.
When Warner Brothers said that it was renewing focus on it's DC comics' properties, they were not kidding. First they announced that they were working to develop an Arrow spin-off featuring the Flash, and now they are going to take us down the streets of Gotham.
Fox picked up the series after a lengthy bidding war. Gotham will be written and executively produced by Bruno Heller, showrunner for The Mentalist. The news was announced on the same day that ABC aired its Marvel Comics' series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Gotham received a rare, straight-to-series pickup order, skipping the need for a pilot.
The hero of the series is Batman staple, Jim Gordon. Created in 1939 by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, Gordon has been around just as long as Batman has and is a pivotal part of Gotham City. Actor Gary Oldman played Gordon in the Dark Knight Trilogy. The character is one of Batman's closest allies and also the father of BatGirl, aka Barbara Gordon.
Gotham is also home to a wealth of super villains and the network has already expressed an interest in exploring their origins as well as Gordon's.
DC isn't new to the TV game. In recent years, we have seen a plethora of shows from the company, including, Birds of Prey, Smallville, and Arrow. Let's not forget the lesser known, Human Target, which also ran on Fox.
