Jon Lester discussed the Chicago Cubs' curse and gave hope to fans as they watch their team on their 2015 MLB Playoffs run at breaking the curse this year.
Chicago will be starting Lester in Game 1 of their NLCS series against the New York Mets tomorrow afternoon. He will have the tough task of going up against Matt Harvey, who is one of the better pitchers in the National League as well. New York has a very scary rotation, but the Cubs are confident that their pitchers can get the job done.
Lester talked about the Cubs' curse and said that it has to end sometime when asked by the media. This Cubs team is much different than teams that have reached the postseason in the past and Joe Maddon has found ways to take pressure off of them. Now they are playing at an incredibly high level and confidence is obvious in their play.
Maddon and the Cubs feel very confident about Lester taking the mound for Game 1 of the series. He didn't have the best regular season, however, finishing the year with an 11-12 record to go along with a 3.34 ERA. Lester has had a lot of rest since starting Game 1 of the NLDS series with the Cardinals, in which the Cubs fell by a final score of 4-0.
Looking ahead to tomorrow's Game 1, the Cubs are going to rely on their offense a lot against Harvey. They used the home run in a big way against St. Louis and even knocked six home runs out of the park against the Cardinals in Game 3 of their NLDS series.
During the regular season, Chicago went 7-0 against the Mets and outscored them 27-11. That doesn't mean anything right now, but it still shows that if they play up to their full potential they should be able to be very competitive. New York's rotation has calmed down a bit and they are playing their best baseball of the season, but it is still a number that has to be shared.
It has been a long time since the Cubs showed this kind of confidence in the postseason. Lester is one of the veteran leaders for the Cubs and he is showing it with this type of a comment.
Expect to see both teams come out in Game 1 looking to make a statement. Chicago is more than capable of winning this series and moving onto the World Series, but they have to take things one game at a time and getting a win in Game 1 would be a very important step by Lester.
