The Green Bay Packers came away with an NFL Week 5 win over the St. Louis Rams this week. What five takeaways can be had from the win to make them 5-0?
1. Aaron Rodgers Is Unfortunately Still Human
After an incredible streak of not throwing an interception, Aaron Rodgers threw two interceptions and proved to be human. It was an unfortunate game to see for Packers' fans, but hopefully this will just be a brand new start of an even better streak. Green Bay needs their quarterback to get back on track moving forward next week against the San Diego Chargers, which is something that they can expect to see happen.
2. Green Bay's Secondary Is Just Fine Despite Offseason Movement
One of the biggest question marks coming into the season for the Packers was whether or not the secondary would be able to hold up after losing Tramon Williams and Davon House. They helped answer that question again this week against the Rams with four interceptions, two of them coming from rookie cornerback Quinten Rollins. Green Bay is just fine in the secondary and should be very comfortable with their current group of players.
3. Clay Matthews Fits Perfectly at Inside Linebacker
Coming into the game against the Rams, Clay Matthews was out to prove even more that he fits well at the inside linebacker position. He ended up recording five tackles and 1.5 sacks during the game. That performance was the second straight week that he proved that he fits better as an inside linebacker than outside and he has helped the Packers' run defense immensely as well.
4. The Packers Must Find a Way to Get Eddie Lacy Going
Eddie Lacy is one of the better running backs in the NFL, but there are still some consistency issues which showed up against the Rams. He carried the football 13 times for just 27 yards and no touchdowns in the game. Green Bay has to figure out how to get him going again, which will be the key for their offense down the stretch of the season and into the playoffs.
5. James Jones and the Receiving Corps Are Improving
After Jordy Nelson went down with a torn ACL this year, many thought that the Green Bay receivers would struggle. That hasn't been the case and James Jones has been a big part of helping replace him. Outside of Jones, the Packers have been impressed with Ty Montgomery and Richard Rodgers and it has been obvious that the entire receiving corps is improving each week.
All of that being said, the Packers have to be very happy with their 5-0 record with the tough schedule that they have had. They will now welcome Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers into town in Week 6 and are hoping to remain perfect. It won't be an easy game, but Green Bay has proven themselves to be one of the top teams in the NFL and a definite Super Bowl contender.
