NLDS Game 3 Prediction: Jake Arrieta takes the mound for the Chicago Cubs this evening in his second postseason appearance. Last time out he was able to throw a complete game shutout against the Pittsburgh Pirates to get the Cubs to the NLDS against the Cardinals. Now he looks to give his team a commanding 2-1 series lead in a first to three wins situation.
St. Louis will put Michael Wacha out on the mound for tonight's pivotal game. He finished the 2015 season with a 17-7 record to go along with a 3.38 ERA. There have been quite a few struggles for him both against the Cubs and in the postseason, but he is hoping to turn things around and stay true to the regular season form that he showed this season.
Mike Matheny talked about his team going up against Arrieta and how confident he is with the way that his team has bounced back against top caliber pitchers in the past.
"We've gone up against a number of teams and a number of pitchers where everybody kind of ruled us out and said you can't do this or that, and I think this team has responded well in the past."
Arrieta also talked to the media about how he has been enjoying the moment and cherishing the memories that he and the Cubs have been making throughout this "miracle" season.
"I've been through a lot in my career, and the failure that I've gone through makes me really appreciate the moments of success much more," he said. "I've had some pretty dark times in this game in my career. You know, but I was dedicated to getting over the hump, to putting in the time, the effort, making any adjustments necessary to get to this point."
This game should be a very entertaining one, especially with the atmosphere that Wrigley Field will have. Simply playing at Wrigley could have a major impact on the game as well, as both of these teams are more than capable of powering home runs out of the stadium. Arrieta and Wacha can't afford to hang pitches or there is a good chance for some one swing of the bat changes to the game.
Chicago needs Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo to get going tonight at home. Neither player has recorded a hit in the first two games of the series, but somehow the Cubs have been able to win a game.
St. Louis needs some big plate appearances from Yadier Molina and Matt Holliday to lead the way for their team and Tommy Pham is starting tonight as well which could be a player to keep an eye on.
Expect this to be another close game, but it's hard to bet against Arrieta with the way that he has been playing. This game could go either way, but we'll take the Cy Young candidate in this one.
Chicago vs. St. Louis Final Score Prediction: Cubs 5, Cardinals 2
