When the cast was announced for the movie version of 50 Shades of Grey, all hell broke loose. EL James saw a tremendous backlash from fans of her book. So much so, that Charlie Hunnam, who has been cast as Christian Grey, needs extra security for 2013. In this latest update, we’ll examine the reason behind this.
Most people are aware that Charlie Hunnam, the beefy 33-year-old actor, has been cast as Christian Grey. Hunnam is best known for starring in the hit FX show, Sons of Anarchy.
Even though his character on the show differs immeasurably from the character he will be portraying in 50 Shades of Grey, that doesn’t stop fans of the erotic novel from flocking to the set of the biker action-drama.
Not every person who has visited the set, however, was a fan of the recent casting decision. Immediately after EL James made the announcement on her Twitter, fans took to social media to protest. Facebook and Twitter was filled with their rage.
According to reports, this has forced Charlie Hunnam into hiring more security. Of course, it was actually Universal Studio who footed the bill. The production company couldn’t risk anything happening to their leading man, after all.
And judging from some of the nasty comments on Twitter and Facebook, Hunnam might have some cause for concern. Most of the comments, however, were just critical...not threatening, like this user’s post:
“Charlie is not what many of the fans would have wanted, and that’s sadly going to hurt the movie! When it was announced that an old-looking blond man was playing the role, E.L. James lost a movie fan in me.”
Hunnam quickly defended his commitment to the project and his ability to take on sexually adventurous roles. He told the AP about his past acting experiences which may have prepared him for this undertaking:
"You know what, I had such a baptism of fire with regards to sexuality on camera at the beginning of my career. I starred in the British Channel 4 miniseries Queer as Folk, where I played a young, gay character, and there were some incredible, explicit sex scenes on that show...Now I am 16 years older and more mature so I don't anticipate them being too much of a problem. It's like anything else, just an exciting challenge."
