'Star Wars VII' Meets 'Man of Steel:' JJ Abrams Wants Realism

The highly anticipated seventh installment of the legendary Star Wars saga is almost upon us. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director J.J Abrams talks about his realistic approach to the series. Could Star Wars be getting the Man of Steel treatment?

J.J Abrams isn't exactly known for realism. The Lost and Fringe creator is best associated with science fiction. That's why when Disney acquired the rights to produce sequels to the science-fiction fantasy series Star Wars, they turned to Abrams. After already successful rebooting the Star Trek franchise, Abrams seems more than capable of handling the series. Now, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, George Lucas' successor talked about his aproach to the beloved franchise:

"We are working really hard to make a movie that feels as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible."

He then went on to further elaborate--citing his own child hood love of the series as his inspiration:

"I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [the new film] to feel real; to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairy tale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right.”

So the question now is, what does "real" mean in a world of light sabers and Jedi Knights? No doubt about it, Star Wars is and always will be a tale of fantasy. Maybe Abrams is going to take some cues from Zack Snyder's recent Man of Steel. Where he took the largely unrealistic Superman, and adapted him to fit into the real world.

Or he simply could mean that he wants the new episode to feel like a natural extention of the sci-fi epic, and that he is not going to force feed us grand departures or wild new ideas.
