Russia's highly-controversial anti-gay law has reportedly forced Selena Gomez to cancel two of her upcoming shows in the country. The possibly pregnant actress/singer has allegedly been denied a visa because of her open love and support of the gay community.
Gomez joins the increasingly long list of celebrities effected by the new law that prohibits the spreading of homosexual "propaganda." Actor Wentworth Miller recently came out in an open letter to GLAAD, bashing the policy:
"I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly."
The law also has many planning on boycotting the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Singer/actress, Cher recently turned down a chance to perform at the opening Ceremonies, revealing:
"I can’t name names but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there."
Still...other gay rights supporters have taken a different view on the subject. Openly gay artist Elton John said that he plans on keeping his already scheduled tour dates for December, telling The Guardian:
"I’ve got to go. And I’ve got to think about what I’m going to say very carefully. There’s two avenues of thought: do you stop everyone going, ban all the artists coming in from Russia? But then you’re really leaving the men and women who are gay and suffering under the anti-gay laws in an isolated situation. As a gay man, I can’t leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’ve got to go."
