Disney has announced that it will not be renewing it's long running contract deal with Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The studio has decided to place its focus on its Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar franchises.
Jerry Bruckheimer and The Walt Disney Corporation have been working together for well over ten years now. That is all about to end soon. The producer has brought us several beloved Disney hits like, The National Treasure films, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Prince of Persia and most notably, The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as well as the recent big screen flop, The Lone Ranger. In a statement released by the company, it said that it would be ending their partnership after Bruckheimer's contract runs out in 2014. However, Bruckheimer will stay on board to finish 2015's fifth Pirates' film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales.
The statement adds that Bruckheimer wants to produce, “more mature films.” Disney is also planning on moving forward, putting a lot of focus into it's ever-growing Marvel comics film franchise, as well as its recently acquired Star Wars and Pixar animation studio.
Marvel has already proven to be very successful for Disney. The first phase of films, featuring Iron Man 1,2, and 3, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Thor, all lead to the highly successful 2012 film Avengers. Disney/Marvel have already put into phase two as well as plans for phase three.
The Pixar franchise has recently made waves for the company when it was announced that it had to push back the release of its once expected 2014 The Good Dinosaur. The move also pushes back the highly anticipated Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory to 2016.
So what do you think about the news. After losing $190 million on The Lone Ranger, is it finally time for Bruckheimer and Disney to go their separate ways?
