The Doctor is in. Hulu recently acquired the streaming rights for Doctor Who. The announcement comes just in time for the premiere of the 12th Doctor, who will appear in the upcoming 2013 Christmas special. That is, of course, before starring in the eighth season (or series depending on where you are from) next year. The streaming service also announced it will have access to other BBC favorites like Top Gear and the Dr.Who Spin-off series, Torch Wood.
Hulu Plus is a subscription based online television and movie streaming service put together by network giants, NBC, Fox and ABC. The service is known for it's selection of current season TV shows that normally air a day or two after their network premier. Given Hulu's business model and their recent acquisition of Dr. Who, it stands to reason that upcoming episodes will also be aired on the service. For now, Hulu is making it's stockpile of past seasons available for instant streaming.
The long running beloved BBC series begins the 8th season of its newest incarnation in August of 2014, after first airing its upcoming 2013 Christmas special. That special will feature the first appearance of the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, who is replaceing actor Matt Smith in the title role.
The good Doctor isn't alone in his forthcoming British invasion. Hulu is also adding many other BBC Favorites, such as, Torchwood, Top Gear, Sherlock, MI-5, Luther, Fawlty Towers,Twenty Twelve, and Blackadder.
Hulu's acting chief executive Andy Forssell, released a statement about the companies recent acquisition:
“By adding this expansive collection of premium BBC Worldwide programming, Hulu Plus solidifies its role as a top streaming platform for the best British programming available in the U.S."
What do you think? Will Dr.whulu be able to save the struggling service or will Netflix continue to reign as the supreme king of stream.
