The New York Giants will welcome the Washington Redskins this evening in Week 3 action. What is a reasonable final score prediction for this NFL game?
Eli Manning and the Giants have gotten to a disappointing 0-2 start against very tough competition in the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons. They should have knocked off both teams, but have come up with late game problems that have kept them from doing so. Heading into tonight's game against a Redskins' team that has quite a few question marks should give them a perfect opportunity to get their first win of the season.
Washington is led by Kirk Cousins, who dramatically took over the starting job from Robert Griffin III just ahead of the 2015 NFL season. He has led the Redskins to a 1-1 start, including a huge victory over a talented St. Louis Rams squad last week. They have their work cut out for them if they want to head into New York and knock off their division rivals, but they are more than capable of doing so.
Both of these teams are much improved from last season, but they still have some issues that could cost them wins.
New York has already seen their coaching staff cost them the first two games with play calling issues. News also broke that they told running back Rashad Jennings not to score what would have been a game clinching touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys on first down because they wanted to run clock. Those issues have to be fixed moving forward if the Giants truly want to compete in the NFC East.
Cousins and the Redskins are still dealing with a lot of locker room drama with the Griffin situation. Reports have come out that Griffin and Cousins cannot even be in the same room together due to the issues, which is not healthy for any football team.
As usual, the NFC East rivalry games are usually intense and a lot of them come down to the wire. It wouldn't be surprising to see that be the case once again tonight, with the winner being whoever can make the fewest mistakes under pressure late in the game. Manning and Cousins have been had consistency issues throughout their career, but the Giants simply seem to be the better all-around football team.
Matt Jones and Alfred Morris are the X-Factors for the Redskins, as they showed last week that they can be a deadly duo on the ground. They are both capable of tearing up the New York defense, which makes this game a bit more intriguing. If the Redskins can control the pace of the game and turn it into a hard fought rush heavy game, they have a very solid chance to come away 2-1.
That being said, New York figured things out offensively last week with Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. connecting for multiple huge plays through the air.
Expect to see the Giants come out strong at home and get their first win of the season. The Redskins will put up a tough fight, but they simply won't be able to make the plays and it wouldn't be surprising to see Cousins commit a key turnover in the fourth quarter that does them in.
New York vs. Washington Prediction: Giants 28, Redskins 17
