English conductor Paul Daniel has been named as a new director of the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine from the 2013-14 season.
Daniel, former music director of English National Opera and current principal conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, is particularly noted for his recordings and performances of opera and of British music. He will play both roles in Bordeaux as principal conductor and artist director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia in Santiago de Compostela.
The 53-year-old composer studied music at King's College in Cambridge. After graduation, he learned composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
His honors include an Olivier Award in 1998 for opera and a Gramophone Award in 1999 for his recording with Naxos Records.
Daniel will take up the position in January 2013.
