Sheryl Crow has gone country. The pop star has crossed genres with her new studio album, Feels Like Home. In a recent interview, the singer/songwriter calls making the switch "difficult," despite how "Easy" her new song makes it seem.
Grammy award winner Sheryl Crow made quite a name for herself in the pop world. The vocalist/lyricist, known for her mid 90s hit songs "All I Wanna Do" and "If It Makes You Happy," has found new home in Nashville.
The 51-year-old previously dipped her toes into the genre with her 2002 duet with Kid Rock, "Picture." Now that she has officially dove all the way in, she spoke with Country Weekly about the challenges country music brings:
“Because I produced myself for most of those records, I was left to my own devices as far as letting some things slide lyrically. There’s none of that in country songwriting where you leave anything up to the imagination. Like any kind of Beck song, we all love it, but sometimes you have no idea what it’s about. The country format does not operate on that. It’s very first person. Every line has a point or has meaning, something that’s clear. It was a great challenge for me, and one that I feel like has given me a whole new energy as far as my career goes. I’ve been doing it for 25 years and able to say I’m still excited and my best songwriting is on this record and I’m still learning and I’m still challenged."
Crow credits her friend and country musician Brad Paisley for encouraging her to make the move, telling Voice Of America:
"He'd say, 'If your records were to come out now, they would be on country radio,”
Sheryl Crow's eigth studio/country debut album Feels Like Home is available now.
