The highly anticipated movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, recently angered many fans with their casting decisions. Now, a director has stepped forward to defend their choice of Dakota Johnson. Her co-star, Charlie Hunnam, also came to her defense.
Daniel Barnz directed Dakota Johnson in his 2011 film, Beastly, and thinks she may be the perfect fit. He went on record as saying:
“She has this combination of natural intelligence and this sort of appealingly unconscious sexuality which make her an inspired choice for the part. She makes very unexpected [acting] choices,” he says, “in that I think there’s something unpredictable about her onscreen. That makes her characters really come alive. She’s going to blow everyone away.”
Since the announcement was made that Dakota would be portraying Anastasia, fans have expressed their outrage on Twitter and Facebook. The constant bashing caused Charlie Hunnam to step forward and defend his on-screen woman:
“As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us. It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.”
Of course, not everyone is convinced. One director spoke to the New York Post on the grounds of anonymity. Needless to say, he was not impressed:
“It’ll be challenging to make Dakota believable as an innocent when it comes to sex and men. All of Dakota’s prominent roles to date have been extremely sexual. She’s even played the mom of a 6-year-old! So I’m a bit dubious as to whether she’s really right for this role.”
