‘50 Shades of Grey’ Movie Cast Update: Charlie Hunnam Defends Dakota Johnson and Himself From Angry Fans

The main cast of the 50 Shades of Grey movie has been announced and it’s left some fans angry. Charlie Hunnam, who will be portraying Christian, took time to defend Dakota Johnson and himself after the outrage.

Hunnam is known for playing a wide range of characters. From Queer as Folk to Sons of Anarchy, Charlie knows how to commit to a character.

His past acting experience, however, wasn’t enough to keep fans of E.L. James’ novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, happy. Facebook and Twitter went abuzz with news of the casting decision and most of the comments were negative--like this one:

“Charlie is not what many of the fans would have wanted, and that’s sadly going to hurt the movie! When it was announced that an old-looking blond man was playing the role, E.L. James lost a movie fan in me.”

Many were concerned with whether or not Charlie would be committed to the role. This should be no problem, as he told the AP:

"You know what, I had such a baptism of fire with regards to sexuality on camera at the beginning of my career. I starred in the British Channel 4 miniseries Queer as Folk, where I played a young, gay character, and there were some incredible, explicit sex scenes on that show...Now I am 16 years older and more mature so I don't anticipate them being too much of a problem. It's like anything else, just an exciting challenge."

But that wasn’t all he spoke about. Hunnam also took time to praise his co-star, Dakota Johnson, in a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

"As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us. If felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it."

But who cares what they say. We want to know what you think. Tell us your thoughts about this casting decision in the comment field below.
