A.J. Green is heading into the final year of his contract with the Cincinnati Bengals and is, reportedly, wanting a massive contract extension. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting that Green is wanting more than the five-year, $71.3 million extension that the Atlanta Falcons gave wide receiver Julio Jones. Those demands are big to say the least and there is a good chance that the Bengals won't cave in anytime soon.
There is no denying the fact that Green is one of the best receivers in the NFL, but the Bengals have also been hurt by his injury issues in the past.
During the 2014 season with the Bengals, Green ended up missing three games. He still caught 69 passes for 1,041 yards and six touchdowns, but he wasn't nearly as dominant as he had been in years past. Cincinnati would likely rather wait to see what kind of production he gives them this year and reward him based off of the upcoming season.
Green is wanting money that he simply hasn't earned, which is a major concern for almost any team. He didn't show his normal dominating self all season long last year and based on his performance shouldn't get anywhere near the type of money that he wants. Cincinnati would be making a wrong decision by giving into his contract demands without seeing him resurrect his numbers this season.
At 27 years old, Green is still in the prime of his career and has a lot of high quality football left in him before he retires. Assuming he can stay healthy, he will get the type of contract that he is asking for in due time.
Patience is a virtue and both the Bengals and Green need to be patient in this contract situation.
It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months, as the season gets underway. Green doesn't appear likely to get his desired extension before the season gets underway, but there is a good chance that he will get it following the season if he can put up big numbers. Expect to see Green rebound this season and get back to being the type of player that deserves the type of extension he seems to be wanting.
