Prince William & Kate Middleton Skip Charles to Become King?

It seems hard to believe given Buckingham Palace's having just quietly celebrated Queen Elizabeth II becoming the longest reigning monarch in England's history, but Her Majesty is said to have decided to step down form the throne in favor of her grandson, Prince William. According to the latest gossip news updates, the Queen has decided that to the crown should pass Prince Charles over since no one has really liked him since he married Camilla. Word has it that no one is more excited by the announcement than Princess Kate Middleton, who thought she would be old and grey before she was coronated as Queen.

While it hardly seems like anyone could make a better queen than Elizabeth II, it's being reported that the 89-year-old monarch has decided to abdicate her throne in favor of her very popular grandson, Prince William.

One source in the latest September 21, issue of OK! Magazine claims that it was fairly difficult for Prince Charles to come to terms with his mother's decision at first, but in the end he understood that his being king wouldn't be good for the House of Windsor over the long-haul:

"It's been a tough pill for Charles to swallow...and Camilla is devastated.

"But Charles now begrudgingly understands why it's best for the crown to skip a generation, for the sake of keeping the royal family relevant and vital."

Although it is truly doubtful that Queen Elizabeth is ever going to actually step down in order to allow her grandson to take the throne, Prince William told People magazine just last month that he counts himself among the luckiest people in the world, just for having the opportunity to have known her:

"From a personal point of view, I am privileged to witness the private side of the Queen, as a grandmother and a great-grandmother.

"All of us who will inherit the legacy of my grandmother's reign and generation need to do all we can to celebrate and learn from her story.

"Speaking for myself, I am privileged to have the Queen as a model for a life of service to the public."

Of course one wonders how close you can really ever get to a person that you have to always refer to as "The Queen".
