Rachel Maddow, host of The Rachel Maddow Show, just celebrated her anniversary. The openly gay anchor has been on MSNBC for over five years now.
It’s no surprise that Maddow made a hyper-intelligent and witty political commentator. Of course, it was no guarantee that she would connect with audiences.
Maddow, admittedly, can come off as a bit of a know it all and at times...an elitist. Luckily for Rachel, she seemed to resonate with fans of the liberal news network. In a matter of months, her ratings doubled.
While the ratings have not come close to those of Fox News, it did prove a major point. People will tune in to an openly gay broadcaster. Maddow was, after all, the first.
Some would argue that Anderson Cooper deserves that title, however, he was not openly gay when he started at CNN (not that he is really that open about his sexuality now).
Maddow was overjoyed last Monday, when discussing her time as a MSNBC host. Rachel stated:
"Five years has flown by, but we all here are quite acutely conscious of what a rare thing it is for a show in this business to make it to five years. Speaking for myself, I feel lucky and blessed and grateful — grateful to MSNBC for putting us on the air, grateful to the best staff in television who I get to work with every day, and grateful most of all to you."
It’s no wonder that Maddow feels lucky, especially when one looks at Fox News, who seems to be changing their entire lineup.
