It's official! The Flash is coming to Arrow. The Scarlet Speedster and the Emerald Archer will team up in the second season of the CW show. Glee star Grant Gustin has signed on to play Barry Allen in the DC Comics TV action/drama and a possible spin-off.
Grant Gustin, best known as Sebastian of the Fox musical comedy Glee, will step into the shoes of beloved superhero Barry Allen/The Flash. For those of you unfamiliar with the comic character, the CW has released a description:
“A Central City assistant police forensic investigator who arrives in Starling to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past. A comic book fan boy, Barry is obsessed with the Arrow unaware that working with Oliver and Felicity to solve the crime has brought him right into the dangerous world of the vigilante.”
As his moniker suggests, The Flash is blessed with the gift of super speed. This serves as a slight problem, as there is no such things as superpowers in the Arrow universe. Barry will reportedly first arrive in Starling City without his signature speed, but in order for the superhero to spin-off he must first become super.
The president of WB hinted at plans to power up the character as it explores Allen's heroic orgins in the potential spin-off, while speaking with critics in July:
"We plan to introduce a reoccurring character and an origin story of Dr. Barry Allen, who you now know is The Flash. We're planning an origin story. We'll see how it goes, and hopefully it will go well. We do want to expand upon the DC universe. We think they have rich characters that we can use, and we felt this was a very organic way to get there."
The new season of Arrow airs Oct 9th a 8pm on the CW. Gustin, who won't appear until later in the season, is scheduled to begin filming in late September.
