Symphony Center Presents Jazz Series Celebrating 20 Years with Herbie Hancock and Other Jazz Luminaries

The Herbie Hancock Quartet will open the 2013-14 Symphony Center Presents Jazz Series with a concert on October 11. This performance kicks off the 20th anniversary season of the jazz series that is known as being one of the most comprehensive in the nation.

The October 11 opener at Symphony Center in Chicago marks the first time pianist Herbie Hancock has performed on the Jazz Series since 2004. Hancock was recently selected as a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, one of the nation's top cultural honors.

His iconic quartet is rounded out by guitarist Lionel Loueke, bassist James Genus and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. For this concert, Hancock will augment the percussion with special guest Zakir Hussain--the world-renowned tabla virtuoso.

Hussain joined the Herbie Hancock Quartet on their critically acclaimed tour of South America earlier this year. One of the most prominent musicians in the world music movement, Hussain has performed with artists as diverse as George Harrison, Yo-Yo Ma, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison and the Kodo Drummers.

Hancock and Hussain have collaborated frequently throughout the years. Hancock's musical explorations over five decades have led him to transcend limitations and genres, delving into world music and electronic music, as well as acoustic jazz. Along the way, Hancock has won a total of 14 Grammy awards, including 2008's Album of the Year and a 2011 Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for "Imagine" off of The Imagine Project.
