Big Brother host Julie Chen Revealed on her daytime, women"s round table show, The Talk, that workplace racism led her to have plastic surgery in order to promote her stalled carrier.
The Talk is running a week long "Secrets" segment that is having all the ladies spill there guts on the air. Earlier in the week we learned of Sharon Osbourne's self described "Flingy Wingy" with Jay Leno. Wednesday was Julie Chen's turn in the hot-seat, where she told the world that workplace racism led her to have plastic surgery in order to westernize her looks. She recalled one moment that really stood out:
"My secret dates back to — my heart is racing — it dates back to when I was 25 years old and I was working as a local news reporter in Dayton, Ohio."
There a news director told her that:
''You will never be on this anchor desk, because you're Chinese. Let's face it Julie, how relatable are you to our community? How big of an Asian community do we really have in Dayton? ... On top of that because of your heritage, because of your Asian eyes, I've noticed that when you're on camera, when you're interviewing someone you look disinterested and bored because your eyes are so heavy, they are so small.' "
This experience, and a similar one with an agent, convinced the American born reporter that she would have to change her looks if she wanted move in her carrier. She weighed the decision with family and friends before ultimately electing to under go plastic surgery to widen her eyes--a decision she says that she does not regret: "I have to live with every decision that I've made…And it got me to where we are today. And I'm not going to look back."
