Leah Remini, who is competing on this season’s DWTS, gave a tell-all interview to Ellen Degeneres on the season premiere of her hit-morning show. The actress opened up and talked about leaving Scientology, the religion made famous by actor Tom Cruise. Check out the video clip below to see for yourself.
It has been a really big year for Leah Remini. The lifelong Scientologist recently made national headlines for splitting with the religion that she’s called home for so many years.
This marks one of the most high-profile exits in the religion’s short history. Remini did more than just leave the organization, she filed a missing persons report on behalf of Shelly Miscavige.
Shelly is the wife of the secretive organization’s leader, David Miscavige. Leah filed the report out of concern for her friend who has not been photographed in public for the last six years.
Remini first grew concerned about Shelly at the wedding of Tom Cruise. After inquiring about Shelly’s location, Mrs. Remini was allegedly berated and told she didn’t have the rank to ask such questions.
Leah’s been pretty quiet about the matter, but that all changed when she sat down with Ellen. The actress opened up about how she got involved with the religion and why she chose to leave it.
"We lost friends who can no longer talk to us who are still in the organization. But we have other friends, who are not in the church, who have stood by us and that's all we can ask for...My mother got involved when we were very young, so it was all we really knew..."But over time, my eyes got opened and I could just no longer be affiliated with the organization, and my family felt the same, so we left."
You can catch Leah on the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars. The show premiers on September 16.
