A rather lovely story from the good fellas at Google. Their recent Google Doodle marking the anniversary of Debussy's birth (his 151st since you ask) was a hit for the classical recording industry.
Artist Leon Hong created the doodle and, according to reports, there was a corresponding upsurge in Debussy record sales.
In the U.K., one recording of Suite Bergamasque that featured in the doodle hit No. 6 on the official Classical Singles Chart--a 2004 recording performed by Francois-Thiollier on Naxos. Similarly, a performance by Michel Béroff on Warner (originally, an EMI album) came in seventh.
Other classical composers to have been featured in the Google series include Rossini (depicted by four frogs giving a performance of The Barber of Seville), Mozart, Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, Fyodor Chaliapin, Liszt, Kodály, Chopin, Stravinsky, Sergui Celibidache, George Enescu, Verdi, De Falla and Villa-Lobos.
Now, with this potential upsurge in record sales doing some real good, we propose a contemporary composers month on Google.
Google Doodle for Mark-Anthony Turnage, anyone? Or Jake Heggie?
Come on, people power, we can make it happen!
