A potential successor to the outgoing Sepp Blatter for FIFA president, South Korean born Dr. Chung Mong-joon, has called into question the ethics of the international soccer governing body, labelling it a "corrupt organization." His charge has riled outgoing president Sepp Blatter, who was quick to point out that Chung was a FIFA vice president.
In a statement released by FIFA, Blatter had this to say, via The Guardian online, "It is disturbing, to say the least, to hear Dr. Chung Mong-joon describe Fifa as 'a corrupt organisation' during a press conference announcing his candidacy to the next election for the Fifa presidency. Even more so when one recalls - and as Dr. Chung cannot have forgotten - that he was a Fifa vice-president and a Fifa emergency committee member for 17 years from 1994 up until 2011."
Chung announced his candidacy earlier Monday and vowed to clean up the corruption that some say ran rampant under Blatter. He rained hellfire on its outgoing president and the organization as a whole during his announcement, via the same article, "Today Fifa is undergoing a profound crisis." He then took a swipe at Blatter, "(The new FIFA president) must be more than just a head of the technical department. The core issue of the coming election is whether the 40-year-old system of corruption should continue or not."
Widespread corruption in the world soccer governing body, forced the newly elected Sepp Blatter to step aside after 17 years of service. Blatter has not been publicly accused of any wrongdoing but his leadership in the crises has. VOA News covered Chung's press conference and had this quote from him, "The real reason FIFA has become such a corrupt organization is because the same person and his cronies have been running it for 40 years. Absolute power corrupts absolutely."
