Increasingly brave actor Wentworth Miller continues to amaze and uplift. The Prison Break star who recently came out of the closet to protest Russia's anti-gay laws is speaking out once again. This time, Miller revealed that he had secretly attempted suicide as a teen.
Wentworth Miller, star of the Fox series Prison Break, publicly came out of the closet last month when he wrote an open letter, declining an innovation to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in protest of Russia's highly controversial anti gay laws.
The brave 41-year-old didn't stop there. Speaking at a Human Rights Campaign event in Seattle over the weekend, he revealed some of the struggles he underwent because of his sexuality. In what is sadly an all to common story, the actor came clean about trying to take his own life as a teen.
"The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15. I waited until my family went away for the family and I was alone in the house and I swallowed a bottle of pills, I don't remember what happened over the next couple of days but I'm pretty sure come Monday morning I was on the bus back to school pretending everything was fine. I told no one"
Miller continued :
"Growing up I was a target. Speaking the right way, standing the right way, holding your wrist the right way. Every day was a test and there was a thousand ways to fail, A thousand ways to portray yourself to not live up to someone else's standards of what was accepted."
Hopefully, Millers experience will be able to help others struggling understand that it truly does get better.
