We all just assumed that HBO’s Game of Thrones was going to last seven seasons but it looks like that might not be the case. Despite killing off its major characters, (RIP Kit Harington's Jon Snow} like they were Star Trek red shirts, the show might be looking at extended two or three seasons. That is if there are any characters left by the time Season 8 rolls around.
HBO programming president Michael Lombardo is now pushing for eight or more seasons of Game of Thrones. Lombardo made the announcement to reporters Television Critics Association fall previews, saying (via TV Guide):
"That's definitely open. I think 'seven seasons and out' has never been the conversation. The question is, how many beyond the seventh season we're going to do. Obviously we're shooting six now and hopefully discussing seven. They're feeling like there are probably two more years after six. I would love them to change their minds, but that's what we're looking at right now."
We have already been told the show spoil the events of the books, as showrunner David Benioff recently revealed to a panel at Oxford Union at the university, saying (via Mashable) :
"Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. "
If the show’s are planning on splitting the final 2 books into 3 or 4 seasons, then we might not have as much as of the ending spoiled as we previously thought.
