Despite the fact the Fast & Furious 7 director James Wan, was able to turn Paul Walker's last film into a billion-and-a-half-dollar hit, there is no guarantee that the Conjuring visionary is coming back for Fast 8. According to the latest gossip news updates, Universal is still in talks with several new directors, but executive producer, Vin Diesel, seems to be leaning toward Fast franchise veteran, Justin Lin, who directed the last three films in the series leading up to this year's over-the-top sequel. While it seems hard to believe, Neal Moritz, who has been with the franchise since the very beginning, insists that the real reason a Fast 8 director hasn't been selected at this point, is because it's just too early in the process to know what kind of movie they are going to make next.
It seems almost unfathomable, but James Wan isn't the only name on Universal's short list of directors in consideration for their next Fast and Furious project.
Although Wan's latest movie was able to bring in more than $1.5 billion -- making it the fourth largest grossing film of all time -- even with all the difficulties that Paul Walker's untimely death brought to the process, Neal Moritz, didn't even bring up the man's name while recently discussing Fast 8 with Cinema Blend.
When asked if he and his partners weren't any closer to nailing down someone to helm the new sequel, the longtime movie producer explained that they were doing their best not to get the cart ahead of the horse:
"What we decided is that we are going to be a little further down the development process on the screenplay before we bring in a director.
"We have talked to a lot of directors, but we just haven't made that decision because we're trying to still wrap our heads, 100%, about what the next Fast & Furious is.
"Once we do that, then we'll bring in the director."
After making Fast and Furious films, 4, 5 and 6, Justin Lin left the series to pursue other projects, but from the looks of Vin Diesel's latest Instagram updates, he wants his old friend back in the Furious family for Fast 8.
What do you think about James Wan potentially being passed over for Fast 8?
Does he deserve to make as many Fast films as he likes until he gets ready to go like Justin Lin did?
Or does it just make sense for Universal to keep their options open when making their next billion-dollar blockbuster?
