Music documentaries offer a unique insight into the life behind stardom and success. For Amy Winehouse and the new rock-doc Amy, the piercing of her veil of mystique results in a truth that has left audiences and critics reflecting on their own presumptions about the tragic life of the iconic singer.
Much like the recent Kurt Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck, delving into the life and humanity of a celebrity can also reveal the tragedy behind their craft. Cobain, as his documentary insinuates, was at the mercy of his stardom and fandom. His downfall was a mixed solution of equal parts fame, childhood misfortune and an overly invasive media.
So is the story similar to Ms. Winehouse, whose latest documentary aims to find the "girl behind the name"? Shrouded in mystery, Amy concludes that a lot of what catalyzed her untimely death was her personal life and a life that the public seemingly defined for her, without warrant.
An article at MTV states:
"The movie is unflinching in its indictments of those close to Amy who failed her when she needed support — including her father, Mitch Winehouse, and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil — but it's the rabid public, who champion successful celebrities while simultaneously yearning to see them crash and burn, who bear the greatest collective responsibility."
With a trailer already out, Noisey has premiered an exclusive "Making Of" featurette that gives a short background into what went into Winehouse's latest invasion of privacy.
The film is in select theaters now and has been a source of much heated debate in the popular media. Without further ado, check out a short selection dedicated the singer's legacy below.
