Breaking Batman vs Superman news. The battle for the cowl is over, and rumors that Christian Bale would return to the role were finally put to rest. Warner Brothers has confirmed that Ben Affleck will play The Dark Knight in the untitled sequel to the Man of Steel.
It's official Warner Brothers announced Thursday that Argo director Ben Affleck will be the next man to don the cape and cowl. The announcement was met with a mixed reaction from fans.
Some fans are still finding it hard to forgive Affleck for his role in the highly disappointing 2003 superhero film Daredevil. Others are looking at the actor/writer/director's more recent works like The Town and Argo, as proof that he has grown as an artist and has come a long way since Reindeer Games.
Man of Steel director Zack Snyder feels pretty confident that Affleck is the man for the job, saying in a statement Thursday:
"Ben provides an interesting counterbalance to Henry's Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him."
WB president of creative development and worldwide production, Greg Silverman, shares Snyders faith in Affleck:
"We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular superheroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent, and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character."
The announcement comes after rumors spread that Christian Bale had been offered $50 million to maintain the mantle of the Bat. Affleck himself is no stranger to rumor mill. Earlier this year it was alleged that he was being tapped to direct and star in a possible Justice League movie.
While JL has been pushed back and Batman vs Superman put in its place, Afflecks casting suggest there might be some truth behind the buzz.
Henry Cavill will reprise his role as The Man of Steel, but he won't be the only man on set to have worn the famed Super Suit. Affleck wore the S-Sheild when he played Adventures of Superman actor George Reeves in 2006s Hollywoodland.
