The divvying up of B.B. King's estate has proven to be a trial in and of itself. Despite his family's protestations, King's longtime manager, LaVerne Toney, has been named sole executor of the musician's assets.
King's daughters--Karen Williams, Patty King and Rita Washington--had been fighting an arduous legal battle to prevent Toney from being named executor by King. It's been alleged that the manager had prevented family members from visiting B.B. in the hospital.
It was also reported that Toney had been subtly flushing out King's bank accounts.
However, these claims have been dismissed and, as per the Associated Press, Clark Country District Judge Gloria Sturman said:
"I'm not saying there may not be other issues or that we may not need outside assistance. But he had a plan. I don't see anything before me at this point in time that he wanted that changed."
The will, which was filed on Jan. 2007, puts LaVerne alone in charge of administering King's last will and testament. Nevertheless, these trust documents have not been filed publicly.
While the grueling battle over the late blues guitarist's property has upset many of the King's loved ones, it shouldn't tarnish the legacy that B.B. has left on a generation of musicians and listeners.
Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones described King as "one of the greats" and added that he was "one of the true gentleman."
And he couldn't be closer to the truth.
For now, King's estate looms over a dark precipice but should be resolved soon. So in the meantime, keep up with something from B.B. below and keep him in your thoughts.
