Disney and Rizolli and Isles Suicide Update: Religion and Depression May Have Played Role in Lee Thompson Young Death

Former Disney star Lee Thompson Young, who also starred in TNT’s Rizolli and Isles may have suffered from depression. Entertainment News sites are also alleging that the actor's religion may have played a part in the young man’s decision to commit suicide.

Fans were shocked when they learned that the seemingly worry-free Young took his own life. However, according to E! News, an anonymous score close to Young claims that the straight laced former Disney Star suffered from depression for months prior to his suicide.

Young was apparently an avid follower of the African religion Yoruba. E! News also alleges a possible link between Young's religious beliefs and his suicide, citing the phrase "iku ya j'esin" which translated means "death is preferable to ignominy."

The entertainment news site has since come under fire for allegedly faking the headline. The controversy may stem from the dual meanings of the word “Yoruba” being both a little known religion as well as the more commonly known multicultural west African Tribe.

Classicialite.com cannot at this time confirm any of E! News reports. To be fair, E!'s updated headline has a disclaimer meant to clear up the confusion.

Police found Lee Thompson Young dead at his home on Monday after the actor didn't show up to set. The 29-year-old’s agent has confirmed that Young took his own life.

Young starred as Detective Barry Frost in the TNT crime drama Rizzoli and Isles. Since his passing, TNT has released the following statement:

"We are beyond heartbroken at the loss of this sweet, gentle, good-hearted, intelligent man. He was truly a member of our family. Lee will be cherished and remembered by all who knew and loved him, both on- and offscreen, for his positive energy, infectious smile and soulful grace. We send our deepest condolences and thoughts to his family, to his friends and, most especially, to his beloved mother."

Rizzoli and Isles show runner Janet Tamaro took to twitter on behalf of the show, tweeting:

"We are all without the words to truly express our collective grief and profound sadness at the loss of such a sweet, bright light."

Lee got his big break playing the starring role in the 1998 Disney Channel show The Famous Jet Jackson. Disney has also released a statement following the heartbreaking tragedy:

"Nothing any of us can say will adequately express our sadness over Lee's untimely passing--our thoughts are with his loved ones and the many fans of his work."

During his short career, Lee also had numerous supporting roles including playing an intern in the NBC/ABC hit-comedy Scrubs and superhero Vic Stone/Cyborg on Smallville. Young is also known for his role as Chris Comer in the 2004 football film Friday Night Lights.
