Jamie xx might be at the top of his game with his debut solo release, In Colour. Slated as one of the year's best albums, Jamie also composed a score for the new contemporary ballet, Tree of Codes, which is set to premiere in July.
The ballet is inspired by Jonathan Safran Foer's novel of the same name and is set to be a part of this year's Manchester International Festival. One of Jamie's many contributions to the musical landscape of the performance is a somber instrumental with a piano very much in the foreground that is entitled "Pianna."
The Foer novel, though, is moreover an updated version to the Polish writer Bruno Shculz's book, Street of Crocodiles. Reworking the many threads into a new fabric of storytelling, Foer is known for his eccentric use of the page (as seen in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) which lends itself nicely to the electronic music producer's track.
As Pitchfork notes, Tree of Codes was choreographed by Wayne McGregor in an environmental created by visual artist Olafur Eliasson; soloists and other dancers from The Paris Opera Ballet and McGregor's Random Dance Company will perform it.
So for the time being, as we await the new ballet's premiere July 2, preview Jamie xx's track below as an added build to the anticipation.
