Oprah Winfrey has officially apologized to the country of Switzerland. The billionaire host accused a shop owner in the country of practicing racism when she refused to show Winfrey an expensive handbag.
The incident occurred when Winfrey was visiting Switzerland to attend the wedding of longtime friend, Tina Turner. In between nuptials, the worldwide celebrity host asked to view a bag that cost a reported $38,000.
Instead of quickly showing the bag to Winfrey, the worker informed Oprah that she couldn’t afford the bag and refused to display it for her.
Afterwords, Oprah commented on the racist actions of the shop-keep. But, the mogul regretted the decision. On the red carpet of her upcoming film The Butler, Oprah commented thusly:
"I'm really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland. I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don't expect that you would be able to be there.”
The shop owner also responded, claiming that:
"This has nothing to do with racism. I am here for everyone and the customer is king.”
She went on to claim that the shop worker just wanted to show Oprah a variation on the bag.
In case you were wondering, Oprah made over $77 million in the year 2012. She is, of course, the richest woman in the world.
What do you think about the recent accusations? Do you think the shop owner was racist...or is she just terrible at determining who has and doesn’t have money? Let us know in the comment field below.
