New Orleans jazz musician Lionel Batiste died Sunday in New Orleans.
The vocalist and bass drummer of the Treme Brass Band was diagnosed with cancer in April and had a short battle with cancer.
"It is with deep sadness that we inform the New Orleans community of the passing of our beloved 'Uncle Lionel' this morning at Ochsner Hospital," said his daughter Karen Williams in a statement.
"He was surrounded by his family and loved ones and transitioned peacefully. The family wishes to extend its deep gratitude for the kindness and love shown during his illness," she continued.
Widely known as "Uncle" Lionel Batiste, he was a prominent figure in New Orleans jazz music for several decades.
The funeral schedule is not confirmed yet.
