Alec Baldwin was on The Howard Stern Show recently, where he told the shock jock about a Marvelous opportunity he had to miss. The 55-year-old actor revealed that he had to turn down a role as the villain in a superhero film.
"I have [been offered a role in a superhero movie], but I won't mention which one. I don't want to undo somebody because they hired someone else to do it. But they asked me to play a villain in one of these Marvel movies," he told Stern.
Superhero movies are all the rage with audiences and are almost guaranteed to bring in millions at the box office. This summer’s Man of Steel brought in a reported $160 million in tie-in promotions before its release.
Not just box office gold, the Iron Man film series revived Robert Downey Jr's career, making the actor nearly as much money as his comic counterpart Tony Stark.
Baldwin would have been in good company too. Several well respected artists, such as Anthony Hopkins, Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Jeff Bridges, Russell Crowe, Sally Fields and Martin Sheen...just to name a few, have all had supporting roles in comic book movies.
Baldwin had a good reason for not accepting the role, telling the King of All Media:
"I wasn't available, They wanted me to work a certain time. And because of my wife's pregnancy, I had to turn down two films this summer that I wanted to do."
Alec, has already made one appearance in the genre, starring as the title role in 1994’s The Shadow. Still, many fans would love to see the 30 Rock star try his hand at villainy. With a more than action packed fist full of films in the works, perhaps Baldwin might still have a shot.
