The long-running extreme sports contest run by ESPN is about to find itself in the waters of Michigan this summer with a new partner. MasterCraft Boats is joining up with ESPN to help produce some record-breaking events on the Millennium Park Lake in Grand Rapids, MI. The return of wakeboarding as a medals competition and a shot at a new world record in the skifly are the main draws for this stop of the World of X Games tour.
MasterCraft will be sponsoring the new wakeboarding events, MasterCraft Throwdown and Real Wake Driven by MasterCraft, as well as the skifly jump. The Detroit Free Press has the details for this high-flying event:
"Waterski jumping officials from the Guinness Book of World Records will be on hand to see Freddy Krueger attempt to soar the length of a football field and break the world skifly record of 299 feet."
With all of the excitement of wakeboarding coming back to the X Games, President of MasterCraft Terry McNew showers his company with praise to ESPN:
"MasterCraft has long been at the forefront of progression in watersports from the company's initial roots in competitive waterskiing to its current role reinvigorating the landscape of wakeboarding competitions. ESPN and the 'World of X Games' will serve as the perfect collaboration to showcase the amazing athletes currently pushing the limits of the sport and expose the future of watersports to a global audience."
Adding to the competitions, the companies are planning on other entertainment like music and pyrotechnics to complete the experience. This episode of World of X Games will premier live on August 8 on ABC.
How do you think the returning competitive wakeboarding contest is going to do? Do you think that Krueger will be able to jump an entire football field during his skifly run? Is the World of X Games going to become successful? Tell us what you think.
