Prince William and Princess Kate have welcomed into the world their very own royal baby. Yesterday, the couple revealed the child’s name for the first time. They were also able to leave the hospital for home. We have all the updates.
The child’s official title will be--His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. Wow! That is quite a mouthful.
To learn the significance of this decision, we turn to The Washington Post who has broken down the historical meaning:
“No fewer than six British kings have borne the name ‘George’; in addition, its personal symbolism for William made it an obvious pick for months in betting pools across the country. The last King George was George VI, William’s great-grandfather, whose valiant battle with a speech impediment when he inherited the throne after his brother’s abdication was dramatized in the Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech.”
That’s right...we may be looking at the future King George VII. For many though, the name seemed to conservative for the modern and progressive Will and Kate.
But, believe it or not, the name actually is more modern than you might think. The modernism comes from the brevity of the name...and not any particular moniker. Future kings and queens are generally given four names; however, Prince George has but three.
The Washington Post continued their analysis on the name “Louis:”
“‘Louis,’ royal-watchers said, was picked at least in part as a tribute to Louis Mountbatten, Charles’s beloved great-uncle, who was killed when an Irish Republican Army bomb blew up his boat in 1979. ‘Louis’ is also one of William’s names.”
