Fans of comic book movies have a lot to look forward to. Both of the major comic book publishers, DC and Marvel, left their marks on Comic-Con over the weekend--each with earth-shattering announcements about their upcoming feature films. Joss Whedon stopped by to reveal the title and villain of the sequel to his 2012 mega-hit The Avengers, while Zack Snyder surprised guests by announcing that Superman and Batman will share the screen in his follow up to The Man Of Steel.
Marvel Studios knows a thing or two about silver screen success. The Disney-owned giant perfected the formula with a string of stand alone blockbusters featuring Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor, that eventually all came together for 2012’s mega-mashup, The Avengers.
Marvel doesn't plan on abandoning the formula any time soon. With sequels scheduled for both Thor and Caps, as well as, the film debut of the lesser known Guardians of The Galaxy. This will of course lead into the highly anticipated Avengers Two. Writer/ Director Joss Whedon stopped by Marvel’s panel at the famed convention, to announce the full name of the follow up--Avengers: The Age Of Ultron.
The title may reveal the villain, but it also leaves fanboys with a few questions.
Ultron, a superpowered android created by yet-to-be-seen Avenger, Hank "Antman" Pymm, and creator of the future Avenger vision, has a long history as one of the teams better known Big Bads.
However, the inclusion of Ultron has many wondering what room that leaves for the Titan Thanos, who many believed to be the next villain based on his appearance in the first films coda. Chances are the Thanos teaser was just an early taste of Marvel's much larger endgame. Most fans won't mind the wait...not with a handful of feature films and a tie-in TV show (ABC 's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) to keep them busy.
Not to be outdone, DC Comics and Warner Brothers announced that tent-poles Batman and Superman will team up for the first time on the big screen. The world's finest are two of the biggest names in comic history, but don't expect the Man of Steel and The Dark Knight to start out as super friends.
Director Zack Snyder is drawing inspiration from Frank Miller's acclaimed graphic novel ‘The Dark Knight Returns,’ which has the heroes at each others throats.
Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman, but expect a new face behind Batman's cowl. Christopher Nolan, director of the ‘Dark Knight” franchise, is taking a backseat on this one to work on other projects.
