Orchestra Uses Smartphones to Track Instruments

The Mason County Orchestra is using smartphones to track its instruments.

In using a smartphone app "codeREADr," the orchestra's music director Charlie Hunter is able to automate the process for checking in and checking out instruments as well as monitoring payment status and physical condition.

Hunter said the project began when he challenged Mason County High School student Nathan Henderson to find an app that would help track the orchestra's instruments.

"Nathan really took the bull by the horns and found something we need," Hunter said. "Really tedious work has been streamlined."

In order to use the app, barcodes for each instrument were created and attached to each of the orchestra's instruments and cases. Once the barcode is scanned, instrument information and student information is entered into a database that can be viewed in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Hunter said the orchestra began to use the app last fall. This coming academic year will make the second year with the system in place.
