Randy Travis Health Update: Awake and Recovering from Brain and Heart Surgery, Fiance and Doctors Spill Beans

Randy Travis, country music superstar, is awake and recovering. Travis underwent emergency heart and brain surgery last week. Over the weekend, his fiance and doctors spilled the beans on his health update.

Randy Travis has woken up after spending nearly a week under heavy sedation following emergency surgery last week to reduce swelling on his brain.

Doctors Gary Erwin and Michael Mack released a video update on the condition of the country music star:

"Mr. Travis is no longer requiring any mechanical devices that help support his heart, He does remain on intravenous medications to help support his heart, but we are decreasing the doses of those everyday and actually beginning to start him on oral medications which he will use long term to help support his heart. As a result of his heart condition, acutely, and the stroke, he was put on a ventilator to help him breathe during his hospitalization. He remains on that, but we are decreasing that support daily. He is breathing spontaneously with the help of the ventilator and hope to have him weaned off of that very soon breathing completely on his own," said Dr. Erwin.

Travis is still not out of the woods, and it seems the singer has a long road ahead of him. Doctors are saying that he may not be released for 3 more weeks and it could take months for him to recover.

Travis fiancee Mary Davis also appeared on the video in order to issue a statement of gratitude:

"First and foremost, I just want to thank the friends, the family, the outpouring of love and affection that has shown up at the hospital and at home and through several different avenues of support, I know that those are prayers that have helped mend his heart along with the skilled hands of the physicians and doctors and nurses here at The Heart Hospital of Baylor in Plano. I know that Randy feels each and every one of those. He feels the hands of the doctors and the care of the nurses and the love of his fans. His friends and family have all been touched by that. He is responding well to voices and he sees and he understands. He's miles beyond where any of us thought he would be a few days ago."

Travis, who has been hospitalized since last week, is battling congestive heart failure. To make matters worse, the star had a serious stroke late Wednesday July 10, causing Mr. Travis to undergo another invasive surgery.

Randy was rushed to a Dallas area hospital E.R on Sunday July 07 because of complications from viral cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease that could lead to irregular heart beat and sudden cardiac failure. Where some forms of cardiomyopathy can be linked to drug and alcohol abuse, we learned this may not be the case for Randy:

"We performed a biopsy of his heart muscle, and it shows scar tissue, It does not show active infection. From the appearance on echocardiograms, which are images of his heart, this is not the appearance of either drugs or alcohol causing the heart condition. Mr. Travis does have a family history of cardiomyopathy, and it is more likely related to that." said Dr Mack on Monday. The singers mother and brother both suffered from heart troubles in the past.

Travis has struggled with sobriety in the past. The singer/songwriter has nearly as many DUIs as he does Grammys. Last year, he was arrested for getting into a fight in a church parking lot.

It appeared that Randy was turning his life around, after having underwent court-ordered alcohol treatment in order to avoid a six month jail sentence.

The 54-year-old singer, songwriter and actor has accomplished a great deal during his life. Some career highlights include: Six Grammys, six Country Music Awards, nine ACMs, ten AMAs and seven Dove Awards.

Travis is most known for his hit songs: “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “Deeper Than the Holler,” “Digging Up Bones,” “On the Other Hand,” and “Three Wooden Crosses.”
